Charles Clarke MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, launched the report of the national review of the social sciences on Tuesday, 25 March 2003. The 160 page report, Great Expectations: the Social Sciences in Britain, has been produced by the independent 12-member Commission on the Social Sciences in response to a proposal by the Academy of Learned Societies for the Social Sciences. It summarises the current strengths of the social sciences in Britain - which have an annual turnover of £2.8 billion in universities alone, 20% of which is for research - and areas of concern, based upon contributions from over 200 individuals and many organisations, plus a review of many statistical sources. The report contains 60 recommendations to various parts of government, the funding councils, the Economic and Social Research Council and other research funders, and to universities and other important 'players'. A PDF version of the report may be downloaded here for viewing.
